Working with github, how to connect to the project and make changes to it?

Hello, for example, I want to connect to a project on GitHub and take an active part in it, that is, change it. What do I need for this? As I understand it, I need to clone the project and create a new branch, and then send the changes. Or how is it done right? Let me know, thanks in advance!

Click the Fork button, the project is cloned into your github account.
Work, commit and push to yourself.
Then you propose a pull request.
If they give it, it's a smerdzhat with the main repository.
