Interested in how this is possible and how it can be implemented? (Similar to quake live, which makes it possible to run the q3 client in the browser using a plugin)

Well, you can also use gtk > 3.2. It, as far as I know, supports the html5 backend. So your application is supposed to work well in a more or less modern browser.
