Wordpress: what's the difference between metaboxes and custom fields?

As I understand it, meta boxes and custom fields solve the same problem: adding posts with non-standard fields. But when should you use meta boxes or custom fields? What are the differences between them. If possible, provide links (if any) with a detailed description of this issue.
