Windows vs. ubuntu
Hey Habr!
I plan to switch to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS soon. Now I have Windows 7 x64 available. Question: what software alternatives for Win 7 are there on Ubuntu?
I use: MS Office (especially Visio), Skype, Adobe PS (sometimes), C/C++ programming (MS VS 10), Scala, Python, Java (planned), uTorrent, Adobe Reader, CCleaner, 7zip.
Thank you.

Photoshop, Office 2010 - really better in a virtual machine.
IDE - Eclipse or Netbeans - there is no fundamental difference. All of these languages can be written.
Torrent - qBittorrent or uTorrent under wine.
PDF - works by default, as already mentioned above.
7zip - sudo apt-get install p7zip - and 7z archives will open, and the rest will plow anyway.
In general, the main thing is to check the box confirming the installation of closed codecs during installation.
Video - smplayer or gnome mplayer. If you watch something with subtitles, then smplayer determines the encoding more correctly.
Audio is deadbeef if you don't need something complicated. Well, or Banshee out of the box, if you need goodies like last.fm.
___________
Of the relatively simple text editors, Sublime Text 2 was absolutely right above, I advise you too.
_______________
And absolutely no analogue of CCleaner is needed for any Linux at all - this is not windows clogging for you.
There is LibreOffice, OpenOffice, although sometimes there are problems with Word files. There is Skype, no PS, there is GIMP, but it's not that all the same. Instead of a studio, you can use QtCreator, but a good notepad will do (Sublime Text), you can use eclipse. Eclipse for Java too. As a default Transmiccion torrent, I use and have no complaints, instead of evince's adobe reader, 7zip is of course also there. I don’t know about the cycleliner, but it doesn’t seem to be really needed here, except to clean the basket ...
Most of the programs are included, others are installed from standard repositories without problems. Well, at least from the repositories of their developers on offsite.
bash, apt-get, aptitude, vim, gimp, gcc, python, java/javac… And Wine to help you.
CCleaner?!?!?!
MS Office (especially Visio) -> LibreOffice, Koffice
Skype -> Skype
Adobe PS (sometimes) -> either run it under wine or use alternatives like Gimp or Krita
C/C++ (MS VS 10), Scala, Python, Java ( I plan), uTorrent, Adobe Reader, CCleaner, 7zip.
Most IDEs allow you to work in various environments, so there is a wide choice here - Eclipse, Netbeans, products from JetBrain and a bunch of others. There are also a lot of editors with code highlighting and plugins.
uTorrent - Transmission, qBittorrent, KTorrent
Adobe Reader - in gnome for viewing pdf and other formats by default eog if my memory serves me right, but under kde Okular.
7zip - installed from reps as a console utility (like other archivers). As a front-end in the File-roller gnome, under the Ark sneakers.
CCleaner?!?!?!
Soooo, I don't understand why there is no standard sracha? Why only useful, adequate comments? M? No, it won't work like that...
Использую: MS Office (особенно Visio), Skype, Adobe PS (иногда), программирование на C/C++ (MS VS 10), Scala, Python, Java (планирую), uTorrent, Adobe Reader, CCleaner, 7zip.
As far as I know, there is no analogue of Visio in Libreoffice. If you need an office 2010, then under Vine, the visio does not work on it. I am using virtual machine.
Skype under Linux is easier, faster and more convenient. No multiple video conferences. When working with the camera, you may need a hack.
Adobe PS works under Vine using gimp for me it’s more convenient (to understand this, you need to select an area and see that it can be changed without much difficulty)
C, C ++ are any IDEs of which there are a lot under Linux, it’s better to google and choose for which tasks. you can use geany if you only need highlighting and simplicity + speed.
uTorrent IMHO is not as convenient as Transmission, it is smarter, simpler and more convenient. Already in ubuntu.
Under Java Eclipse
Adobe Reader - Okular or default in ubunt.
CCleaner is not needed, to analyze the hard disk, where it is busy, use Baobab
7zip, rar, tar and other ubunt archives and so it opens.
People write everything correctly, they just forget that Adobe Reader is also available for Linux. Together with Skype, I recommend using SkypeTab.
And yes, CCleaner?!?!?!
I can advise QT Creator as an IDE for C / C ++, I personally liked it wildly. Just a tip so that you know that there is such a thing, if you suddenly don’t know :}
Some versions of PhotoShop work under wine (as mentioned above), but it is necessary to install some libraries using winetricks (which ones I usually look at winehq.org), otherwise it will work unstable (for example, problems with text input).
> MS Office (especially Visio)
Recent versions of LibreOffice work very well with old binary formats (doc, xls, ...), but still not so well with new ones (docx, xlsx, ...). As for Visio, if you need to open and edit VDX files, then there are no alternatives to the virtual machine yet, unfortunately.
If you are going to raise a virtual machine with Windows for office / photoshop, I recommend XEN, and connect via RDP. Works noticeably faster than vbox/vmware. With Google, it can be set up in 2 hours (or 1, if you know that in order for the network to work, you need to do sudo killall dnsmasq [relevant for ubuntu / mint])
Well, again, from the experience of a recent move, I can advise Linux Mint. The same ubuntu, but the usability of the standard shell config is subjectively higher.
I recently also migrated here, check out the comments here , there were a lot of useful things.
MS Office → LibreOffice for services, LaTeX for serious documents
Visio → DIA, QCad
Skype has
Adobe PS → Gimp, Kpaint
MS VS 10 → geany + gcc / g++, for GUI - GTK, Tk, WXwidgets or at worst Qt
Scala, Python , Java is
uTorrent → ktorrent etc.
Adobe Reader → xpdf, okular, evince
CCleaner → a lot of all kinds of removers, even find. -date ...
7zip is
