Windows 8 VS Linux?
Hello everyone, I'm sitting on W8 (8.1) as you already understood .. and all the time I'm tempted to switch to Ubuntu, I'm in oak oak software and prompted me to switch to W8 (I'm a front-end developer) when you work with a parallel open PS, Brackets, Chrome and in chrome there are still ~ 5 tabs, then everything lags very wildly, in a calm state - a song, and as soon as I start working on a new project, everything immediately slows down terribly, that is, switching between PS and the editor takes ~ 10 seconds, which is very slow my work. And the question arose whether I should change OS .. Maybe this will change the performance and efficiency of my system for the better. My iron is quite old, I want to ask you for advice, will it give me something or is it better not to twitch and collect money for a box better.
ZY I want Ubuntu as the main system
Z.Z.Y If it makes sense to put it, will there be problems with firewood and a video card with a screen resolution
Pentium (R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 2.60GHz 2 cores
Video - ati radeon hd 4300/hd 4500 series
Mother - BIOSTAR G31D - M7
2GB of RAM
I don't play toys, the computer is exclusively for work

It's not about the OS, it's about the RAM. 2GB will not be enough for all these applications, and besides, running in parallel...
Install gimp on Windows, use it instead of Photoshop and understand that you don't want to use Linux. Seriously, what is the capacity of the system? If x32 try win7 x64 and photoshop and chrome from 2009-2010
Almost all people who complain about the brakes of Windows are themselves to blame for these brakes.
Your machine, even for your tasks, was outdated a few years ago.
I have 8GB of RAM, SSD and core i7 - a configuration more suitable for your tasks - everything flies under almost any load (unless, of course, there is some process that loads the percentage by almost 100%, and that is quite ok). And there is practically no difference in speed between Ubuntu (which is in dual boot) and Win 8.1.
judging by this G31D-M7 , the maximum amount of supported memory is 4GB. Therefore, the easiest option would be to buy 2GB of RAM.
See if the system began to respond normally, if it still lacks responsiveness, then you can already look towards Linux.
ps
you also have a built-in video that eats 256 meters, and if you take into account the system itself, then everything about everything remains 1 gig for the programs, so it's not surprising that everything slows down like that, because the system is unbearably heavy on swap.
ps2
Instead of Chrome, I would advise you to use Firefox, it is quite economical in terms of memory usage per bookmark.
Question from the category:
"And who is better, brunettes or blondes?"
To begin with, I would find out the cause of the brakes, and then I would look for a solution. W8 has a great task manager and performance monitor.
Personally, I would advise installing elementary OS.
Although it is based on Ubuntu, it works faster (I tested it on my netbook with Atom 2 Hz and 2 GB + integrated Intel video card). Someone will say that there is xUbuntu, but the xfce interface does not please me.
I managed to launch Photoshop, since I'm doing layout, I need it.
I installed a 100 GB SSD on a similar machine. The computer has risen from the dead. But Ubuntu is still faster than the Fat Eight. I have never suffered with firewood.
Chrome \\ Chromium today is greedy on all platforms (like other browsers), I think due to the fact that we have seriously advanced in Internet technologies.
You will have to play around with Radeon, but if he is crazy about dancing with a tambourine, then install Ubuntu. If you think that ubuntu is the holy grail of rejuvenating your computer, then it is not. The performance is comparable to windows.
You should only switch if you are sure that all the software you need to work is under linux, Photoshop or something similar, as noted above, is not there.
PS I myself am on ubuntu.
