See the technical documentation, when I upgraded such a laptop, I did not find information about the support of this platform for 2x core processors, or at least hyperpneys. I took P4 M765, 2GB of RAM and, in principle, everything suited me, on Vista you can work tolerably.
There is an option with overclocking, a pair of contacts is closed with a jumper and the frequency of the stone and the RAM increases sharply, but this is at your own peril and risk.

If I were you, I would take a Macbook Pro, try it, you might like it. For the money you can get with decent performance and in good condition.
