Why won't the Excel file open?

I have an excel file created in 2007 version. Now for some reason this file won't open and shows the error message "Excel cannot open the file filename.xlsx because the file format or file extension is not valid. Make sure the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the file format.". The question is - is it possible to restore excel online, without downloading programs, and how likely is recovery in general?

Have you tried using Excel Viewer to view the file? Try also renaming the file to a shorter name or changing the extension to .xls. There is also an emergency recovery program https://www.oemailrecovery.com/en/excel_recovery.html
