Why won't mysql srart?

MySQL

Logs are empty.
mysql throws ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

$ service mysql restart
$ tail -n 40 /var/log/mysql.log
In general, I want to say that the reason should first of all be looked for in the logs.
