I start a virtual machine with raspbian, in the settings I try to set the number of cores:
-smp 4,sockets=1,cores=4,threads=1
I get an error:

qemu-system-arm: Invalid SMP CPUs 4. The max CPUs supported by machine 'versatilepb' is 1

Is it even possible to allocate more than 1 core at the moment?

The versatilepb car is an antique. Some vexpress-a15 is at least needed for multi-core.
