Why isn't the VMware Workstation shared clipboard working?

Guest - Debian 8.5
VMTools installed, shared buffer enabled in settings. The shared folder works, but copy and paste between OSes fails. What could be the problem?

I solved the problem in a crutch way: I installed VMtools not from the repository or VMware itself, but from one of the archives downloaded on the Internet. Not secure, but it worked.
