Why is Times New Roman set as the document standard if it's so ugly?

Everyone knows that there are nicer fonts like Verdana, Calibri or Segoe UI, but why then did everyone dig into the squiggle roman font.

Times (Times New Roman, eng. Times New Roman) is a typeface based on a serif font created by typographer Stanley Morison and artist Victor Lairdent in 1932 .
Something tells me that in 1932 there was no Verdana, Calibri or Segoe UI.
