Why is there a colon in CNC?

In Wikipedia, as well as other wiki engines, you can find in the url, for example, Wikipedia:Help, Portal:Events, etc. cnc with colons. Actually interests why it is made so, but not through a slash. How does this affect indexing. And where can I read the official documentation on this?

The colon character is reserved for specifying the protocol and port. Not all web servers process this character in the address normally.
