Why is the image copied faster than the unpacked image?

I noticed that the image is downloaded / copied faster than the unpacked one, although the volume is the same. What is it connected with?

Image of what? Download from where?
I can assume that we are talking about an ISO image, then the fact is that .iso is one file, and when unpacked it is a lot of files and a lot of file operations.
