The characteristics of a network connection include not only bandwidth, which most of all affects the download speed of a large block of data, but also such characteristics as lag, jitter, and connection quality.
Lag (delay, sometimes ping) - the response time, especially when there are a large number of serial connections, each of which will wait for its own response. For example, when opening a site: a DNS request, establishing a secure connection, requesting content, loading the page body, loading some script, loading graphics, loading data on the page with some AJAX request. If the connection lag is 500 ms, then we will lose 3.5 seconds only on waiting for each of the stages in this scenario. But the number of non-parallelized requests can be orders of magnitude greater. Often this is the case. For example, the main page of the Toaster is loaded in 45 requests, not all of them are sequential, but still.
The quality of the connection is also important. If there is a packet loss, then in protocols with delivery, for example, TCP, over which HTTP connections are made, the data will have to be requested again. And everyone else will wait until the lost package still arrives. And in the worst case, a connection break may occur, which may lead to the need for a complete restart of the entire data loading process.
Jitter for browsing sites is not so important, it will have a stronger effect, for example, on online games.
