Why is the content of the html file from the localhost folder (MAMP) not displayed?

I created a local host, put in it the simplest html with a line of text. The host opens, but the page shows the contents of the php file from the public htdocs folder, not the html from the new host folder.
Here is the structure:
htdocs/index.php - displayed on algambra.ad
htdocs/algambra.ad/index.html - not displayed
