Why is the code displayed instead of the page?

What can cause code to be displayed instead of page content in a Laravel project?

Apparently the webserver is not calling PHP. The server settings are broken.

There are two options:
1) php is not installed / does not work correctly
2) maybe you use short tags somewhere in the project, but they are disabled in php.ini
