Why is laravel-mix taking a very long time to compile?

I am using Laravel 5.4.10, webpack 2.2.1. Virtual machine on homestead
It has a built-in Laravel Mix utility . And it takes a long time to compile. I type npm run watch, then the compilation takes 40-50 seconds, I make changes - 20 seconds. Why so long? I did not add any of my dependencies, I immediately use what was given out of the box. How to speed up?
