Why is Android disk space encryption needed and what does it save from?

Data encryption greatly affects performance and battery consumption (in android 6.0.1 itself, the performance drop is huge), but is it worth sacrificing this when there are graphic keys, etc.? What does data encryption do? From unauthorized access to the phone's memory when you lost your phone (or other cases like theft) - this is understandable, but does android encryption save from viruses, virus applications, can they read the data when, for example, you use them without knowing what's inside malicious code?

Encryption will protect data to some extent in case the phone falls into the wrong hands. The pattern restricts access to the device, but not to data.
It does not save from viruses and other filth, because. they work already with decrypted data.
