Why github and not gitlab?

Most open source projects use github - why?
Is there gitlab? (or are there pitfalls in their free account?)

If we compare different services, then we should arrange them in order of popularity:
1. GitHub
2. BitBucket
3. GitLab
A little more detail:
1. GitHub
+ a large community, in fact, we first look for something on github, and only then google (if there not found, which is rare)
+ the richest integration of third-party services
+ the convenience of "all in one place" - both our projects and the entire world open source, which we calmly fork, contribute
+ active account on github - better than any resume, as already written
+ our own open source projects on github have a great chance of being noticed
- there are no private repos in a free
account - an organization account is created from a user account, not very convenient management
Update May 2020 : free private repositories have been around for a long time, team / organization management has improved a lot + a whole load of features have appeared.
2. BitBucket
+ unlimited number of private repos for free
+ company account - virtual, easier and more convenient to manage
+ a bunch of third-party integrations too, but less than GitHub
+ / - integration with Atlassian products (for example, Jira) - a huge plus for someone, for someone then minus. Bitbucket is popular in the west with
enterprises 3. GitLab
+ free private repos
+ self-hosted version (but this is from another opera)
- the youngest, very young, there are bugs, the functionality is still poor and not cut out
- few external integrations
May 2020 Update : GitLab's functionality hasn't been poor for a long time - in some aspects they surpassed GitHub.

It seems that so far none of those who answered earlier wrote: there are very different conditions for placing projects in terms of open / closed, paid / free. Accordingly, depending on the needs, the choice in favor of one or the other depends on the specific conditions (the project is open or closed, how many project participants are expected, etc.).

Gitlab as a service appeared for free this year.

I have been using Gitlab for 1-2 years, the impressions are spoiled, everything slows down, often 503 and 504 errors
