Why don't blocks fall apart anymore?

I remember earlier if you make two blocks, one float:left, the other right and set 48% in width, one block running over the other (when resizing the browser) jumped down. This was a real problem, I had to constantly change the width in the media screen. Why is there no such problem now? Have browsers changed? Or is there something I didn't do right before?
