Why doesn't the gradient in Ps change color?

When creating some shape (let's say a rectangle), I want to give the shape a gradient with the appropriate tool through the layer mask. But no matter how I try, for some reason it is always flooded with one set of colors (B/W). Even though I have Red/Green selected in the Gradient panel.
In this case, if you set the gradient through the "styles", then everything is ok.
What could be the problem?
Or is it like that for everyone?

The mask can only be black and white, because it affects transparency. (black = completely transparent, white - completely opaque)
Do it through Clipping mask 161ad68457.pngor adjustment layer.2e67fc0aae.png
