Why doesn't the editor highlight spaces and tabs?

I go to settings->code style->python and see that spaces and tabs are highlighted for me,

but there is no such thing in the code editor itself.

How to set up the editor so that it highlights all tabs and spaces?

Settings > Editor > General > Appearance > Show whitespaces
