Why doesn't socket.io on the client fire a disconnect event?

This problem is widely discussed on github , but no one has yet found a solution. The authors themselves are either silent.
The bottom line is that the socket.on('disconnect', () => {}) event does not cause any action anywhere except in safari. Does anyone have any possible solutions to the problem?
