Why doesn't npm install anything globally?

Hello, please tell me what could be the problem, I installed nodejs from the ppa repository. Why can't I install bower globally? I write
npm install -g bower
or
sudo npm install -g bower
The result is the same, nothing happens, just waiting ..... I waited 20 minutes, nothing happened, what could be the problem? I have Ubuntu 14.04, it doesn't cost anything other than npm nodejs and git.
This has never happened before... Please help me figure it out...

put fresh from developers
What is the difference between node and nodejs?
