Why does Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10 64-bit keep freezing?
Good afternoon. Recently upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit.
And she constantly hangs. 1-2 times a day.
At what hangs tightly. Sometimes, when it hangs: there is a squeak-noise from the speakers. And sometimes silently hangs.
I looked for a solution on the Internet - I did not find it. They write that most likely the matter is in the wood.
I changed the video driver through the toolbar - it did not help.
I tried to install the latest drivers from the official site.
It seems to have worked out.
But, the standard authorization broke. I had to log in through the "additional settings of Ubuntu".
And all the same, Ubuntu hung on dead.
It was not possible to enter the console using CTRL+ALT+F1.
Finally installed ubuntu 16.10. Also 64 bit
The result is the same. Again, it hung tight. I changed the video driver through the toolbar.
But I'm afraid that won't help.
I'm already considering downgrading to an older version.
But, and suddenly it turns out to figure out what's the matter.
Hardware parameters are as follows:
Intel core 2 Duo E7500 - ASUS P5P43TD LGA 775 processor -
GeForce 8600 GT/PCIe/SSE2
motherboard - video card
Operative capacity - 10 GB. (before that it was 4 GB - it also hung).
HDD SSD.
On this hardware (only the disk was an HDD and RAM 2-3 GB.) were Ubuntu and 10.04 and 12.04. did not hang. But, there were 32-bit systems.
I would attach the logs.
But where to watch them?
There are a lot of files and folders in /var/log.
What to watch? What to look for in files. What errors to pay attention to?
And if the system hangs tightly - is it possible that the errors do not have time to register?

Most of all it looks like a hardware problem. Is the old RAM also inserted or are all 10GB new?
I had this, for several years I sat on Debian because of this. he showed himself just fine - there were no freezes at all.
Solution:
I got up dead on my laptop with Intel guts on 16.04, and searched for a problem for a long time until I found this: ... “If it hangs tightly on distra higher than 14.04.3, then 99% that this is due to Intel graphics. I had regular freezes after 20 - 40 - 90 min. It was decided so sudo gedit /etc/default/grub bring the GRUB_MDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line to the following form (if nothing was added) GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_idle.max_cstate=1" Save, close. sudo update-grub And reboot. The problem should disappear if Intel HD is to blame. "... IT HELPED ME. I specifically drove for a week without reloading the video in the chrome browser.
