Why does the "material" disappear when switching from edit mode to object mode?

Why does the "material" disappear when switching from edit mode to object mode?

I put material on the edge so that it glows (in the future this should become a window). In edit mode, everything glows in the color I need, but as soon as I switch to object mode, everything disappears.
