Why does pagination stop working in WP after designating a page as a post page?

I have a page that displays posts of the custom type 'article'. Pagination on this page works fine. But the point is that I need to make this page the main one. After I select it as posts page in wp settings, pagination stops working. Instead of the second page, I see a 404.
I tried changing the permalink settings a thousand times and resaving them. The number of displayed posts on the page in all possible places is the same = 5. I don’t know what to do, tell me plz.
