Why does google fonts have to select all styles for variable fonts?

The essence of variable fonts is that you do not need to create a bunch of files with different styles, so why if you add 1 style of a variable font to the site using cdn google fonts, then the rest of the styles are not available?

On the Google Fonts site, you can generate multiple fonts together or multiple variations of the same font. Additionally, you can only take one version of an existing font.
Perhaps I misunderstood you, what exactly is the problem?
