Why does elastic return all records when requesting match_all, but returns an empty selection for any other?

An index is created, then some data set is inserted into it using batch put. If you look at the state of the index, then everything is fine, I see the number of documents in it.
Problem: If you make a query with match_all, elastic will return records. If I do something else (the same term), an empty selection is returned to me! What could be the problem?
