Why does crontab log in as root?

In auth.log:


pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root

Wherein:

[email protected]:~# crontab -l
no crontab for root

Why is that?

So there is also /etc/cron.* with a bunch of scripts
