While google-chrome (a build of chrome from google.com) allowed me to open a maximum of 20 tabs without glitches, chromium-browser (a GNU community build) allows me to open more than 40:

Here, Google developers suggest that maybe because of Flash. There are no real differences anymore, at least the Chrome developers don't know about them.
Can disabling flash help?
