Why does changing the original image in appwidget change the size of the image?

I'm updating images in an appwidget button, at runtime. However, this resizes the image and consumes the entire layout and leaves no room for text.
I've tried defining "weight" on imageviews and textviews and using 0dp heights when defining a containing height linear layout, but it still doesn't work.
Why is this happening and how can I prevent it?
