Why do you need a backend?

I studied backend on dzhanga. One day I decided to look at javascript and frameworks and realized that a lot of what I did in janga is done in javascript, and the backend is only needed to process ajax requests. I am sure that if everything was so easy (only writing models and views through DRF), then the backend would not be a separate specialty.
Then what else does the backend do, besides processing Ajax requests from the frontend?
