Why do we need other encodings if there is utf8?

Hello, I recently asked a question from a subject. I remember earlier sites often had some problems with encodings, now, of course, there are also such problems, but less and more likely due to the use of non-utf8. But it’s not very clear to me at all, why use other encodings and what is the point of other encodings in general? Or, in theory, it should die over time, but now it has simply remained for a long time?

used to use single-byte encodings. one character 1 byte
in utf-8 any character other than ascii, english and numbers is two or more bytes.
accordingly, the Russian-language text weighs twice as much. well, and storing it turns out to be more expensive, probably ..
but with compatibility and confusion in popular encodings, the problem seems to have been solved. eight)

I use KOI8-R on all my computers. Because I am Russian, I do not experience a lack of symbols. But I have a huge plus: 1 character == 1 letter, there are no problems with working with texts!

Yes.
But the amount of old developments is such that single-byte encodings will exist for a very long time.
