Why do the processes of programs built by MS Visual Studio take up a lot of memory?

Wrote Conway's famous "Life" in C++ using OpenGL GLUT. Development environment - MS Visual Studio 2008 Express. The process takes a little over 9 MB of memory.
Are there programs that allow you to "look" inside the process and find out why it takes up so much memory?
