Why do I need to verify my account via phone?
Most obviously, phone account verification reduces the likelihood of a single user having multiple accounts. But after all, each specific phone number is also tied to a passport? Under what circumstances can a service that has a phone-verified user request this passport data? Why is this even needed and how to work with it?

But after all, each specific phone number is also tied to a passport? Not in all countries.
Under what circumstances can a service that has a phone-verified user request this passport data?Only if it is an OPPS service or law enforcement agencies are interested in the data.
Why would this even be needed...?Historically, phones have been collected for notifications, mailings, and other spam. The secondary task is to make it difficult to register "mults" (from a multi-account). Although even in those countries where the number is tied to the passport, almost anyone has access to a "sim card from the transition." Now, in some cases, such a binding is required by law. Google wi-fi on the passport , for example.
