Why did USB mice stop working in Windows XP?
Seems to be? the wireless mouse receiver from Microsoft burned out, after that absolutely any USB mice stopped working in the system, on any port. You stick it in, the device is detected, the mouse even has time to run for a few seconds, then the cursor freezes forever, although the system reports a successful installation. Flash drives and other devices work fine. The mouse does not work in safe mode. When booting from another OS on a PC, the mice work.
I rolled back the system, checked for viruses for everyone, cleaned out the remnants of Microsoft mouse drivers in the registry and on the disk, cleaned the USB, USBSTOR and HID registry branches with ERD-commander, restored the mouse classes to the default branches in the registry - does not help. I feel like a helpless housewife writing from the microwave.
