Why did the .tk domain become paid?

I went to freenom.com and found out that the .tk domain started costing as much as 9 bucks, although a year ago it was free.
Do you know any other free domains?

On the freenom you need to choose 12 months, not 1 year, then it's free.
Or, alternatively, you chose a name that is too short, 2-4 characters, they are often paid.
