Why did the search on the phone in Google now stop working?

Nexus 5, Android 6.0.1. Phone search stopped working on Google now. For example, it does not even search for the names of installed applications. And when I go to the "Search on phone" item in the Google now settings, it displays stupidly empty activity. What to do? How to return the search?
