Why can't CMemCache load the php memcache extension?

Yii

os x 10.9.4
Memcache and Memcached installed via brew
Phpinfo shows that memcached is installed and connected.

But, yii still throws the error "CMemCache needs PHP memcache extension loaded."
CHADNT?

Set CMemCache in application settings to useMemcached => true.
By default, it tries to work with memcache, and you have memcached.
