Apparently, in order not to increase the visual mess in the list of questions, only the profile (first) tag is shown. In the question itself, of course, all tags are displayed.
I asked this question in a topic on Habré, where a new toaster interface was introduced, the management said they would think about it.
Only one tag is displayed on the list of questions, so as not to overload with information. What's on the top of the list of questions? To quickly understand the context of the question and see those questions that you know the answer to or that you want to get an answer to.
To understand the context, one tag is quite enough, as it seems to me. The algorithm for choosing such a tag is as follows: from all the tags of the question, first those that are subscribed to by the user viewing the list of questions are selected, and then the one with the fewest questions is selected from these tags.
The task of such an algorithm is to identify the narrowest and rarest possible context of the question, so that it is immediately clear what the question is about and it is of interest to a narrow expert in this field.
For example, I take the first question from my feed:How to make money on youtube and monetize your videos on it? As a single context tag, I get the Monetization tag. And here are all the tags of this question, as I see them (the tags that I subscribe to are in bold):
Indeed, for me, the context of "monetization" is much more interesting than "Youtube" or "Business". Although I am interested in all three of these topics.
