Why are pages being crawled but not indexed?

I recently found that in the search console I currently have 3750 pages that are "crawled but not indexed" while 5620 are valid. So a huge share is not indexed. The site is an e-commerce site and the product and category pages are in this "excluded" category. What could be the problem?
