Why are icons missing from .desktop shortcuts?

There are a lot of shortcuts in the ~/share/applications/ folder and they don't have icons until I grant permission to run.

How to give execute permission to all files in a folder?
Maybe someone knows how to make the labels display normally?

How to give execute permission to all files in a folder?
Allow execution by everyone:
Allow only the owner of the file to execute (it's safer anyway):
$ chmod u+x *
