Why are C and Asm the languages for programming microcontrollers and hardware?

After all, there are JPs that are much better suited for this? how about Lisp or Erlang?

Because C and Asm give you complete control over resources and allow you to compile the minimum amount of code. Try running an erlang machine on a microcontroller with 64 kilobytes of memory, or ensure that the time interval is accurate if the Lisp interpreter decides to do garbage collection.
