Why and who needs Durov's Telegram?

... if there is an open secure (and well researched) XMPP (aka Jabber) and a cloud of open source and not so clients (and servers) to it?

Funny! For people, the problem number 1 in Telegram is the lack of the Russian language (the problem is to translate the Send button), but you want to transfer them to xmpp, where are the clients mostly for geeks (like Merinda)?
The whole plus of Telegram is cloudiness, there is nothing to do without a cloud in 2015, as well as very high-quality clients for anything (androids, iPhones, Windows, desktops, consoles).
And about security, in the next topic ( Is it possible to create a chat for a site using the Telegram API? ) in the comments they write that everything is open, but for some reason no one can get 200 thousand bucks (or how much there is now) by reading the correspondence of 2 people.
Well, yes, xmpp was famous for its decentralization, which later ruined it - few people want to maintain servers through which traffic is chasing for free.

Telegram is an attempt to enter the market of mobile IM (I hope also Voice) clients, and the notorious "information security" is just an excuse. By default, messages are not encrypted, and in chats for several participants they are not encrypted at all, there is simply no such option. What else is needed to indicate that information security is not at all a priority for the creators of this product?
Yes, if Durov's team makes group voice calls, I will throw out Skype at the same moment.

It is very popular in Europe. PR did its job...
It was even announced at some conference as the famous breakthrough of the year, something like that :)

Not everyone is able to set up their own xmpp server and correctly configure encryption on it. And on other people's servers, he is not "studied" and not "protected".
In addition, there is too much meta-information there to determine who is who.

Durov is already a brand. In fact, he may already be getting paid to put in product credits. He could be offered to become the face of this startup. And the streams of customers will already follow him.
