Why after installing Ubuntu next to Windows only the first one boots?
Was on a Windows 8.1 laptop. Decided to get acquainted with Linux. I downloaded the Ubuntu image and uploaded it to a USB flash drive. I read that you can put it next to Windows. I chose this option during installation. But now, when the PC boots up, only Ubuntu is in the menu, but there is no Windows. I'm not a pro at this. What can be done? I also need Windows, there is work ..

Thank you all!
The sudo update-grub command helped.
After the reboot, Windows' choice appeared.
Because the hidden mission of bubunta is to exorcise the spirit of Bill Gates :D
I myself have not encountered this because I do not use Linux, but I remember meeting such questions.
You need to reinstall the GRUB bootloader. Dig in this direction, because it is he who is responsible for loading the OS on your PC.
You need to add a partition with Windows to the Linux bootloader. what ubuntu version?
write what you have in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file
in general, the procedure in this case can be as follows:
- find out which partition Windows is on.
to do this, go to ubuntu, go to the terminal - do you know what that is?
No? command line type. try pressing ctrl+alt+T
- type in the window that appears sudo fdisk -l
you will need your superuser password (you remember it, I hope)
- the command will list the partitions of your disk (s)
if familiarity with ubunta and the command line is not going very well, you can download
Grub Customizer graphic tool
ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/install-grub-...
but it's not a sin to have at least a book on ubunt at hand.
It's Linux, after all. albeit disguised.
1. There is a virtual machine for experiments
2. Xs how you and what you did, there are no telepaths, maybe you even wiped the partition with Windows
3. Work in ubunt, just an experiment with full immersion :)
