The task manager in Windows shows processes and their memory and cpu usage.
And what program would you like to see the activity of hdd? To answer the question "what program is now so intensely rustling with a screw"?

I also recommend Anvir Task Manager
In addition to the very wide possibilities of the task manager, it can show in detail (with process names) the load of the processor, memory, screw and network usage.

I prefer to use the Prio utility under XP - it is built directly into the task manager and adds a number of useful functions, making it look like a dispatcher from 7k and even better ...
