Which ubuntu to choose for a home server with Kodi?

Hello dear! The time has come for an iron upgrade of my home server that has been working 24/7 for many years under Ubuntu Desktop 16.04 (which is web / backup / samba / video surveillance / torrent downloader, etc., and it is also a TV set in the kitchen using kodi) and along with this the question of choice arises distribution for it. Since I just got used to Ubuntu and didn’t work with anything else, I’m reluctant to go far from it, but I’m already lost here too. And here's what's confusing:

  1. Do I need a Desktop if I only have kodi out of all the graphics and I don’t need anything else. Now it is configured so that when you turn it on, an account with kodi is immediately loaded, which, without loading the desktop, Unity, etc. I don’t know what it’s called, but the account has a choice before entering the password - like in Unity or immediately in kodi. So, maybe Ubuntu Server is right for me? Will kodi install on it and be able to boot automatically at system startup? What problems might arise?
  2. I would like to put it once and for as long as possible, so I'm considering only LTS. And here, I see, a month and a half is left before the release of 18.04 LTS, and now there is already beta 1. Maybe we should wait until the release (this is not a problem)? Or start configuring everything right now in beta, and then I can upgrade to the release without any problems?

Thanks in advance for any hints!

1. In general, install
m3u-iptv.ru/ustanovka-kodi-17-na-ubuntu-server-16-...
on the server version without any problems 2. If there is support for bionic (18.04) in turnips, then in principle there will be no problems must. And in principle, the beta in ubuntu is practically the final version of the system, there will definitely not be any fundamental changes :)
