For a homemade controller, you must first select the firmware, see which specific processors are supported, and take a demo board with such a processor.
The boards are not vidyuha, you can't buy it expensive, but with a margin for many years, the boards are selected for a specific task.
It is better to have several different cheap boards with different processors than one with the coolest processor.
