Which platform to choose for the implementation of subsites?

I stumbled upon the site . It is in the form of subsites, as far as I understand. But self-written. The question arose about analogues of ready-made CMS engines. Are there any? I know that there is WordPress MU, but it is too bulky for such lightweight sites. Or still choose WordPress?

WordPress MU is no different in terms of bulkiness from WordPress non-MU. Everything works out of the box, even additional plugins are not needed
